The 1975/Loving Someone/Meaning/Breakdown

Yeah, you should be loving someone
Oh, oh, loving someone
Yeah, you should be loving someone
Oh, oh, loving someone
Yeah, you should be…

The opening implies that the person has not been in love before, or it is difficult for them to do so for various reasons. It implies you should be loving someone instead of just having flings. It implies that the character needs to develop more meaningful relationships. Loving someone would be far meaningful compared to what the character typically experiences perhaps.

My heart is telling me the telly isn’t telling me anything
I need but it needs to keep you selling me
Besides celebrities lacking in integrity

The character notices there is nothing of substance being televised. It is primarily about selling. At the same time the character notes that they rely on the media for their success.

Holding up the status quo instead of showing the kids
That they matter, Who are they gonna batter next?
Keep holding their necks and keep selling them sex
It’s better if we keep them perplexed
It’s better if we make them want the opposite sex

Many people do not challenge or question the current systems. The celebrities follow the path of ease and do not attempt to show that everyone is unique, and that they matter. The kids are not being empowered. Sex is used to advertize in order to keep the attention of the masses. The kids are being manipulated and are shown rigid views on sexuality. The kids are kept in the dark and are manipulated to be confused. The character also implies that the media pushes heterosexual views on the kids instead of allowing them to decide for themselves.

Disenfranchised young criminal minds in a car park beside where your nan resides are not slow, they’ve just never been shown that you should be…

Young kids are seen as criminals and are not encouraged to do better. Young kids have not been shown a better path. They are not slow they are just lost for various reasons.

…be loving someone
Oh, oh, loving someone
Yeah, you should be loving someone
Oh, oh, loving someone
Oh, oh…

Chorus repeats. Loving someone can also represent all types of love not necessarily sexual ones. Loving someone can mean in general to love people.

We’re all human, we’re just like you man
We’re sentient or something or other I can’t remember, whatever

The character implies they are just like everyone else. At the same time they are mocking celebrities who typically say they are normal and just like everyone else, yet they at some point lose touch with their formal selves that may have been more sincere.  There is a disconnect that is seen.

We shouldn’t have people afloat
If it was safer underground, we wouldn’t be on a boat

This implies that perhaps there are people trying to escape from somewhere where it is dangerous.  Perhaps the refugee crisis.

Charlatan of telepathy, exploiting insecurities, and preying on the purity
Of grief and it’s simplicity but I know that maybe I’m too scared to call

People are using tricks to sell to kids by exploiting their insecurities. The singer has a history of having a hard time believing in religion and seems to mock it by being subtle with his text. Instead of using pray he uses prey. Kids are being preyed upon by religion which to the singer involves a lot of Charlatan tricks. It subtle. At the same time he implies that perhaps he is scared.

Even Guy Debord needed spectacles, you see
I’m the Greek economy of cashing intellectual cheques

Guy Debord was an author who wrote about the influence of the media on a society and how it can be harmful because it can be manipulative and separate people. The singer then uses self deprecation by bringing our attention to the fact how he is a high brow intellectual and then compares himself to the Greek economy which is in turmoil and in bad shape. He mocks fun at himself.

And now I’m trying to progress, but instead of selling sex…
And I think I should be…

…loving someone
Oh, oh, loving someone
Yeah, you should be loving someone
Oh, oh, loving someone
Yeah, you should be loving someone
Oh, oh, loving someone
Yeah, you should be loving someone
Oh, oh, loving someone
Yeah, you should be…

The character is implying that he needs to progress as an artists and he does not want to be like all other celebrities/stars. He wants to have a deep message. He does not want to sell sex and instead focus on the bigger picture(although he sings about sex often it is meaningful). Then the chorus has a slight change where he says that he should be loving someone instead of being encouraged to do so from the previous chorus. He is encouraging himself now even though he may have had gone through a lot of emotional heartbreak in the past. He still has the optimism.

I am forever alongside the boys in jumpers on bikes
With scarves and cars with autumn leaves
Falling in spirals across the mid afternoon

He still has that fondness and desire to be among the boys with a simple life when he was younger. He brings us back to a simpler time when he was younger.

She blazed about how
cultural language is an operating system, a simple interface
rendered feeble and listless when tested with a divinity
or a true understanding of the human condition

The rest of the lyrics become more poetic, and can be hard to interpret. We have a communication system which we all use(our language is how we operate and connect with others). They way we communicate or connect with others cannot come close to the understanding and expression of the human condition, and everything that is significant.

I never did understand the duality of art and reality
Living life and treating it as such
But with a certain disconnect
To touch the cajoles at the artist with comfort and abandon
and between the spires and rolling roofs of the white city
Sitting in that orange English light
cast only one singular shadow

The character notes that people can look at something such as art and have two different opinions and he relates it to everyday life. There is a disconnect because each person sees things differently, and will have a different opinion. There is a disconnect between people because they tend to judge our actions and see it only from their view. He is trying to bring our attention to the fact that we have to see things from many perspectives not just our own. Listening is the hardest skill to master because we often listen to respond, not to listen and truly understand.

For you are not beside but within me

This is my favorite lyric in this song. It is simple and poetic at the same moment

Although the person who is significant to character is not

physically with them they are with them

on an emotional level and on their mind.

…loving someone
Oh, oh, loving someone
Yeah, you should be loving someone
Oh, oh, loving someone
Yeah, you should be loving someone
Oh, oh, loving someone
Yeah, you should be loving someone
Oh, oh, loving someone
Yeah, you should be loving someone
Oh, oh, loving someone
Oh, oh…
